If God be for me by Nosa

Hello Esteemed Readers!

You’re welcome once again to my bitácora! Today, I’m going to be talking about a song that caught my attention this week: If God be for me.

I’ll start by first saying this song not only serves to solidly reassure us but to melodiously bring back to our remembrance, too, just in case we may have forgotten or are in any doubt, that the love of God for us in Christ Jesus is an inseparable one, and that we can be confident of this truth.

This song borrows from the words of Paul in his letter to the Romans;

“What then shall we say to all these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31

If a question such as the former is put forward, we should know there were things previously mentioned. Right? Yes. So, going back three verses [v. 28-30] we see how the writer admonishes his readers in soothing words that brings reassurance of who they are in Christ, of God’s wonderful plan to conform them to the image of his Son, and how he uses everything that happens to them to bring something good.

Now here is where I take my twist and redirect these words both as written in the scripture above mentioned and in the song [lyrics below] to the lowly and despairing, the despised and downtrodden, the grieving, the prodigal...

You may have had to pass through many a stormy road, crossed several unpleasant paths, and acquired scars from the wounds of your episode(s) of painful stumbling in the dark when you once had no light at all or it seemed it all was gone for a while. It is very possible to still feel sad and unforgiven for what is past. And this is why I want to let you know that regardless of feelings, when you are in Christ, he not only uses everything for his glory but makes you share in the complete sanctification that belongs to his own.

So, I ask you then: when God himself has justified you, declared you free of the guilt of sin, while also raising you to a heavenly dignity, who do you think can bring any charge against you?

Friend, the simple answer is, NO ONE.

It is God who justifies us, declaring us blameless and putting us in a right relationship with himself.

We may have had or are having it rough, and quite frankly, may still have it rough at some point in time as long as we are in this world; we need not deny the ebb and flow of the life we live lest we be hypocrites. But because of the way God has embraced us in Christ Jesus, knowing us even before we were formed in our mother’s womb and having this glorious plan for how we can be conformed to the image of his Son, we can be absolutely convinced that as long as we are IN him, nothing—living or dead, angels or spirits, powerful or otherwise, present or future, high above the world or deep down below the ground, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can stop God from loving us, from rooting for us, from being there for us. Even times when we let go of him, he, like the prodigal’s Father, waits for the day we’ll find our way back home because that is where our hearts truly belong. He is also The Good Shepherd who if he knows we are in grave danger; weak and in need of rescue from the danger of the wild, will leave the ninety-nine to come after us!

And if nothing that happens to us now (today) or that will happen in a future time can separate us from the love of God, why do we think something in the past has that kind of power??

Yes, the world may not forget what you have done or said or where you have been. They may even still keep judging you by it; we live in a world that hardly forgets but rather takes pleasure in pointing fingers. But, listen friend, THE KING OF ZION IS FOR YOU. He is not against you. Even if you’ve made some bad decisions in the past and all, God is for you. No one can lay a charge against you anymore. God has justified you in His love and by His grace. Don’t shrink before the world because of anything any longer. Don’t hide yourself in shame and fear any more. You have a Father who is above all; he saw everything and he doesn’t accuse you. He’s justified you instead. Even more, he is working all things out for your good!

It will definitely not be easy to have confidence in this truth when being pressed on every side by the reality of what is past but it will help to continually remember that the salvation that brings freedom, peace and joy is by grace through faith, and that God is much more powerful than our failures and weaknesses.

May we ALWAYS remember that we are not “orphans” and that we have a Father who is for us, NOT against us. When we repent and retrace our steps like the prodigal son, we’d be surprised to find Our Heavenly Father there running down the road to meet us. We’ll see how fast he orders the ring and the robe to be brought for us, and how quickly he shuts the mouths of the ones who, like (i.e representing) the elder brother in the story, does not want to accept that we can be fully justified from ALL our wrongs.

Lyrics:

What can separate
Separate me
From the love of Christ
What can stand against
Stand against the perfect law of life
Though the storms and ocean rise
Still on Him I keep my eyes
His every word my guiding light
Oh, oh, oh

I’m one with the Lord by covenant
And of this I’m confident
He will perfect what He began
Oh, oh, oh

So what shall we say to this?

Eeeh, eya, eeh
If God be for me eya, eh
Eeeh, eya, eeh
If God be for me eya, eh

What can overturn
Overturn the finished work of Christ
Who can lay a charge
Against the one
That God has justified
Though I’m pressed on every side
There’s a treasure deep inside
That the darkness cannot hide
Oh, oh, oh

My pulse, my hope, my joy I find
In the never ending light
Christ in me and I in Christ
Oh, oh, oh

So what shall we say to this?

Eeeh, eya, eeh
If God be for me eya, eh
Eeeh, eya, eeh
If God be for me eya, eh

Oh, oh, ooh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh

This is my testimony
This is my song
The King of Zion, is for me
Is for me

This is my testimony
This is my song
The King of Zion, is for me
Is for me

Eeeh, eya, eeh
If God be for me eya, eh
Eeeh, eya, eeh
If God be for me eya, eh

Not the highest heights in life
Nor the darkest depths in hell
Can take away my confidence
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
